Tesla Assures Cybertruck Owners: No Rust Concerns

tesla cybertruck rust concern

Cybertruck enthusiasts have raised concerns over the appearance of orange-colored specks on the stainless-steel exteriors of their vehicles, sparking worries of premature rusting. However, reassurance has come from Tesla engineer Wes Morrill, who debunked the rusting claims, attributing the phenomenon to surface contamination.

Since its launch in November, the Cybertruck has garnered attention for its innovative design and purported durability, with CEO Elon Musk boasting about its near-indestructible exterior. Thus, the emergence of what some perceive as rust on the Cybertruck's surface is a cause for alarm among owners and enthusiasts alike.

In response to the growing apprehension, Morrill took to social media to address the issue directly. In a post on X, Morrill clarified that the orange specks are not indicative of rust but rather surface contamination. "Stainless steel is reactive and free iron that sits on it will rust," explained Morrill, who serves as the lead engineer for the Cybertruck at Tesla. He further emphasized that the issue can be easily resolved through cleaning.

Musk's tacit endorsement of Morrill's explanation lends further credibility to Tesla's assurance. The CEO responded to Morrill's post with a simple "Yeah," signaling his agreement with the engineer's assessment.

Support for Morrill's clarification flooded in from various quarters, with users on X sharing images of conventional painted cars exhibiting similar rust-like specks. Additionally, owners of other stainless-steel vehicles, such as the iconic DeLorean, echoed Morrill's sentiment, affirming that such surface contamination is not uncommon and can be swiftly remedied.

The controversy, dubbed "rust-gate" by some on social media, first surfaced on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum. Images shared by concerned owners depicting the orange specks triggered discussions on potential causes, ranging from transport-related contamination to factory residue.

Addressing concerns over maintenance, Tesla has provided guidance in its owner's manual, advising prompt removal of corrosive substances to preserve the vehicle's exterior integrity. Furthermore, the company offers protective measures such as the "Cybertruck Color Paint Film," aimed at safeguarding the vehicle's surface from such contaminants.

Despite initial apprehensions, Morrill's clarification has assuaged fears among Cybertruck owners, reaffirming Tesla's commitment to ensuring the longevity and quality of its groundbreaking electric pickup truck.
